Synopsis & Basic Gameplay
Jugger is a competitive sport where two teams each have 5 active players on the field competing to take possession of the skull and score by placing it in the opposing team’s mound. Teams consist of up to 10 players, with a maximum of five active on the field at any time. One player, called the Qwik, is the only one allowed to touch the skull, while the other four, known as Enforcers, protect the Qwik and subdue opponents by striking them. The game is played on a 20m
by 40m field with goals placed 10 m from each sideline and 2 m from each endline.
When struck, a player is considered ‘down’ and must take a knee and drop their equipment temporarily. They must go down for at least 5 stones, or 8 stones if downed by a chain. Players must also go down for 5 stones if they make contact with the line or go out of bounds, except for Qwiks retrieving a skull thrown out of play or Enforcers retrieving a replacement pompfen. A live player is not permitted to strike a downed player’s equipment with the intent to knock it out of reach. However, if accidental contact is made that does knock it out of reach, they must return it to
the downed player before their count ends.
Matches can be played in two formats: stones or sets. The stone count, which is a consistent drum beat every 1.5 seconds (40 beats per minute), can serve to divide the game into halves during timed matches, and is used by players to count their time downed. If it is being used to time matches, the count begins (or resumes) at the start of each run and pauses when a goal is scored. In a stones match, the game consists of two timed halves (100 stones each, or 150 for finals), and the team with the highest score at the end wins. In a sets match, teams play to a certain number of points and sets, most commonly ‘first to three points, best of three sets.’ Clear and consistent
amplification of the count is crucial, whether through percussion instruments or digital devices.
In CO, if 10 stones or less remain in the first half, and both team captains agree to do so, they may be rolled over into the second half’s total count. e.g. 6 stones rolled over to make a 106 stone half.
Teams begin each run on opposite sides of the field, with any number of players allowed to line up before the run begins, though only 5 members of each team may participate in the run. Before starting, the head referee ensures both teams are ready by verbally confirming and waiting for each team’s Qwik to signal with a raised hand. If a team is not ready, the referee grants an additional 10 stones. This count begins when the first Qwik signals their team is not ready by crossing their arms in an X or if the first Qwik asked takes more than 3 stones to signal. If the additional 10 stones run out before both Qwik’s signal, the referee will force the start of the run by announcing, “That’s time! 3…2…1…Jugger!” If both Qwiks signal, the referee will announce,
“Both teams are ready! 3…2…1…Jugger!” Players cannot make contact with the pitch before the ‘J’ in “Jugger”.
Once the run begins, teams rush to the center to gain possession of the skull. The Qwiks attempt to carry the skull to the opposite side while the Enforcers protect them by engaging the opposing team. A team wins when time or sets run out and they have the most points. After a point is scored, teams have 20 stones to reset behind their starting lines, with the countdown beginning when the skull is placed back at center field.
